A few mins ago an eMail popped into my inbox from Luke Jackson, a musician from a place in Canadialand all the way on the other side of the world. Over the last few months I’ve been getting eMails from various artists asking me to check out their music (I think I got put onto some mailing list or something) so it wasn’t unusual however at the time I was listening to Dan Bryk, who happens to be under the same label as Luke. Given that Urban Myth Recordings only have 9 signed artists, the odds of this happening were rather high. How unusual. It’s like he’s watching me…

Anyhoo, I fired up the good ol’ youtube and checked out the clip. Its pretty damn cool. Reminds me of half of the time-lapse 5DMKII videos that I’ve been obsessing over the past few months. Plus the song is rather catchy too.

Check it out yourself here:

The greatest entertainer ever. August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009

As half of the universe knows, Michael Jackson passed away earlier today. Every single radio station, music TV channel and record store is playing tributes to Michael and I’ll be doing the same.

Michael Jackson was one of the most earliest memories that I had when it came to music. My first vinyl album was Thriller and I have been collecting his music for as long as I can remember. I have every single album and single that was released, as well as the majority of works done by the Jackson 5 and Janet Jackson. I had my first kiss when his music was playing in the background, had my first slow-dance at a school disco to his music, met my first “Internet girlfriend” in a Michael Jackson forum and got to “third base” for the first time with Michael Jackson’s music helping to drown out the sounds (as her parents were in the room next door). I think I have Michael Jackson to thank for my sex life.

I don’t think I’d be loving music as much as I do today if it wasn’t for my next door neighbour ranting and raving to me about a music clip that was going to debut on TV. This clip was for “Thriller” and I found myself that night glued to the black and white TV in my bedroom, awestruck with the sheer awesomeness of what was unfolding in front of me. I got to see the man in concert on the 30th of November 1996, which is also the first time I’ve been in front of television cameras when Channels 7, 9 and 10 all interviewed me after being one of the first people in Western Australia to buy tickets to the HIStory concert at the Burswood Dome. I remember listening to his music as a kid and pretending to be a radio announcer in my bedroom, mixing in MJ hits with Duran Duran and Culture Club. Even to this day, Michael Jackson remains the most played artist in my last.fm profile in the last 6 years.

Yes, it was quite evident I am a huge fan.

Yes, he led an extremely controversial life, however I know he played a part in shaping my life as it is today.

As most of you have probably heard your fair share of MJ music today, I thought I might share with you a bunch of MJ mash-ups. Plus its simply impossible for me to choose my top 10 favourite Michael Jackson tracks. There are way too many tracks I love.

Its currently winter here in Perth, Western Australia. Its cold, wet and windy. Miserable day to some, wonderful day to others. Its als time of the year where its simply fun to just lay in bed and snuggle up in a doona and watch cheesy movies from the 80s whilst jamming your face full of cheezles and jelly babies. However this activity has a slight tendency of increasing the size of one’s ass so I’m suggesting an alternative.

Most people have a soundtrack to their lives, the following is just the foundation to my Friday night and I hope it helps yours out as well.

Tracks 1 & 2 – Orbital & Zero 7

These tunes for the ride home from work. Nice slow, chillout songs meant to help the brain unwind and recompile after a long week of being abused a the workplace. Make sure you’re incredibly generous to the bass on your stereo to ensure that every single gunk of grey matter in your head is vibrated to absolute harmonious bliss.

Tracks 3, 4 & 5 Phoenix, KT Tunstall & CJ Bolland

These songs are dedicated to your arrival at home. Strip off, dump your work gear on your and have a long steamy shower till the hot water runs out. Make sure you don’t have instantaneous hot water otherwise you’ll be there for quite some time. Once done, get dressed and pour yourself a nice two fingers of scotch (or whatever your favourite un-winder is). Consume and repeat. Head to the study, grab your phone/IM/facebook and find yourself 3 friends to start the weekend with. You will need to ensure that one poor sucker is to act act as skipper for the night (as uncle grum does not condone drinking and driving). If need be, bribe him/her by getting everyone to buy him/her dinner for the night.

Tracks 6 & 7 – The Dandy Warhols & Bryan Adams

Time for dinner! Once everyone has arrived, jump in the car and crank the stereo loud to drown out the out-of-pitch shrieking you will be making as the car will suddenly be transformed into a cheesy Karaoke lounge. Make sure you mock anyone in the car who don’t know the lyrics or are unwilling to join in. Head to the local eatery and make sure you get some decent grub into you. Plenty of carbs – none of this salad shit. Your destination should be somewhere familiar but not too crowded like a favourite local pub or out-of-the-way cafe perhaps. The mission now is to ensure that your social group syncs to the same mental level to guarantee a good night. This can be achieved by reminiscing about “the good old days”, talking codshit about sexual encounters that never happened and ensuring a minimum of two pints of beer is consumed per person.

Tracks 8 & 9 – Ram Jam & The Killers

Time to head out to party. By now you should be relaxed, slightly giddy and eager to get out on the dance floor. Jump back in the car and get ready to trip the light fantastic. Re-initialise the car Karaoke and make a beeline to your favourite dancing establishment. Tonight isn’t about picking up – its about having fun with your mates and making new friends along the way. Just be wary about where you go tonight. Match a glass of water with every drink consumed and avoid any social retards like the plague. Don’t stay at the same location for for too long and don’t lose anyone.

Tracks 10 & 11 – Boston & Lynyrd Skynyrd

The night is now over and its time to head home. You’re tired and fragile but you’re still feeling that warm afterglow of having a great night out with your buddies. The night was good, great even and I hope you haven’t gotten into too much trouble. Make sure you text/eMail a quick thank you to any new friends you may have met and then crawl into bed to dream about fluffy poached eggs sitting on some crispy bacon perched on a lightly buttered english muffin and drowned by Hollandaise sauce cos’ thats what you’re gonna treat yourself to in a few hours after you wake up.

The year was 1992.

I was a young and impressionable 13 year old that discovered a lot of exciting things that year. Greek oil tanker Aegean Sea lost 80,000 tonnes of crude oil causing an ecological disaster, George Bush lost his lunch into the lap of Japanese Prime Minister Miyazawa Kiichi and I lost my, uh, wallet that year. It was also the year when Khan Noonien Singh rises to power, although now thanks to J.J. Abrams and his magical fuckuptimemachine, I’m not too sure that counts anymore.

I do not apologise for adding Boyz II Men, Snap! and Frente! to the mix as their music did shape the way I grew up and helped turn me into the man I am today.

Perhaps THEY should apologise to you for dong that.

So, what are your fave fracks of 1992? Hit up the answer in comments section below.

Ahh yes, 1995.

T’was a year that I remember… Vaguely.

A young Jerry Yang and David Filo incorporated a new web start-up called Yahoo!, Jacques Chirac is elected president of France and the final original “Calvin and Hobbes” comic strip is published. I on the other hand was still in high school considering the pursuit of a pharmaceutical career as chemicals really seemed to rock at the time.

It was also a year of awesome music with Tina Arena topping the charts with her album “Don’t Ask” and Scatman John was considered a musician. It was also the year when Daniel John from Silverchair called me a “fucked up cunt”.

Below is a list of what I considered the greatest songs ever to hit the charts that year. Love it or hate the music, I’m sure you’ll be able to sing along with at least half of these tracks.

Do you have any faves from 1995 that you’d like to share?

10. Sophie B Hawkins - As I Lay Me Down

Purely for the awesomeness that is Sophie B Hawkins’ hair. I mean honestly, that hair was beyond awesome.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

9. Greenday -When I come around

The band that started my love for California Punk. Bands like NOFX and Rancid probably won’t ever exist again.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

8. The Offspring – Self Esteem

My top 10 for 1995. #8 – Back when The Offspring were good. No really, they were good once. Honest.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

7. East 17 – Stay Another Day

I’m Not ashamed to say that I saw East 17 in concert with Peter Andre. I’m ashamed to say I wore a Peter Andre tour shirt.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

6. Nicki French – Total Eclipse of the Heart

Brings me back fond memories of being thrown out of James St Nightclub for being underaged. Whoopsie.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

5. Outhere Brothers – Boom Boom Boom

My top 10 for 1995. #5 – This song just sums up how awesome my year 11 ball was. Just to clarify – it was pretty fucking awesome.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

4. Take That – Back For Good

It disturbs me that I know every single word to a Take That song… Although it doesn’t surprise me.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

3. The Cranberries – Zombie

Gotta love the Irish. This song also had a kickass Drum & Bass remix that I massacred my parent’s car speakers with.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

2. Merril Bainbridge – Mouth

Oh I had such a HUGE crush on Merril Bainbridge. I really wanted to do bad things to her mouth.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

1. Coolio – Gangsta’s Paradise

Not only does this top my chart, it also topped every major music chart in the world. Must of been Coolio’s hair.

[Listen to it on Blip.fm]

Last night I was fiddling with blip.fm when I realised that they had changed the search interface to include youtube videos. The song I posted was a cover song so I decided to dig into my mp3 collection of almost 30 thousand for my favourite cover songs.

Can you create a top 10 cover list of your own?
